The fundamental referent of *bujeq clearly was the effervescent surface of liquids (foam, bubbles). By at least PMP times this term evidently also referred to the quiescent scum on stagnant liquids, and to foaming at the mouth. From the latter usage a metaphorical extension evidently was applied to garrulous speech (Aklanon, Sika, Fijian). Finally, there is tenuous evidence (Malagasy, Tae') that a reflex of *bujeq applied to some type of white bead, perhaps from its similarity to a water bubble.
