Also Kadazan Dusun kandavai ‘a white heron that often perches on buffaloes’. PMP *kanaway probably designated the white cattle egret or a similar heron, but in POc the word evidently was transferred to some type of gull.

In spite of problems with the comparative phonology, Milke (1968) assigned Nggela ganae, and such forms as Mailu anawe ‘small seagull’, Siâ ka-na-nawe ‘seagull’ to POc *(ŋ)gana(g)e ‘seagull’. It now seems likely that these forms belong with the present cognate set. Sangir manu kaŋ ‘seagull’, which Milke regarded as external support for his POc reconstruction, appears to be unrelated.
