Also Mongondow limuʔ ‘lemon; citrus fruit in general’, Dampelas, Totoli lemo ‘citrus fruit’, Bare'e lemo ‘citrus fruit; pomelo, Citrus decumana, etc.’, Proto-Bungku-Tolaki *lemo ‘citrus fruit’, Makassarese lemo ‘name for various types of citrus fruits’, Muna lemo ‘citrus fruit’ (includes tangerines, pomelos, oranges, and others). Dempwolff reconstructed *limaw, and included Oceanic forms such as Sa'a moli ‘a wild orange’, Fijian moli ‘an orange, general name for species of citrus fruits’, and Tongan moli ‘orange or other citrus fruit, but usually excluding lemons and limes’ on the assumption that these have undergone syllable metathesis. However, Ross (2008:339) shows convincingly that the POc form was *molis, and the two cognate sets must therefore be distinguished. The similarity of Portuguese limão ‘lemon’ to this form presumably is due to borrowing from Malay.
