This is an extremely variable comparison. Dempwolff (1938) posited *ludaq ‘saliva’, but most forms in the Philippines and Sabah reflect *dulaq with apparent metathesis. However, the attempt to unite reflexes of *ludaq and *dulaq under a single etymon with metathesized variants in some languages quickly falls apart, since a number of languages (Tagalog, Tiruray, Tombonuwo, Dusun Deyah, possibly Malagasy) have an apparent reflex of *dulaq with a medial /r/ that cannot be traced to a single etymological source. Finally, Dempwolff noted Ngaju Dayak luja ‘spittle (after it is expectorated)’ as an irregular reflex of *ludaq, but this can now be assigned to a tentative PWMP doublet *luzaq based only on evidence from languages either currently spoken in Borneo (Kanowit, Ba’amang, Kapuas) or historically deriving from Borneo (Sama-Bajaw), but not subgrouping closely together.
