It is not entirely clear whether Tagalog bákal and related forms meaning ‘iron’ are part of the same cognate set as the remaining words, which range over the meanings ‘fight, battle, war’ to ‘to stab, pierce with the point of a spear; throw downward or horizontally’. The common element running through this set appears to be to fight in war by throwing spears at the enemy, but it is unlikely that these would have been made of iron in Proto-Philippine times.
