Also Buginese bauʔ ‘to sniff, smell’, Makassarese bauʔ ‘odor, fragrant, smelling good; term of address for the high nobility’, Kambera bau ‘to stink’, Rembong mbo ‘corpse; to smell’, Kelabit buen ‘smell, odor’, Melanau (Mukah) bun ‘odor’, pe-bun ‘to smell, have an odor’.

Surprisingly, Manam on the north coast of New Guinea, and a number of the languages of Vanuatu agree in pointing to a verb ‘to smell’ which combines apparent reflexes of PMP *bahu and *deŋeR ‘to hear’, an association that appears also in Tawala nonola ‘hearsmell’ (Ezard 1985). Why odor would be associated with an auditory sensation is unclear.
