Based on the comparison Tagalogbaŋí ‘broiling’, Javanesebaŋi ‘bait’, waŋi ‘fragrance’, Samoanpaŋi ‘bait’ Dempwolff (1934-38) reconstructed *baŋi ‘fragrance’. However, in so doing he appears to have brought together forms that belong to several distinct cognate sets (cf. *baŋi ‘bait’ and *baŋi ‘cook over a fire’).
